Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. And as much as we can all admire Albert Camus’ beautiful sentiment, it doesn’t change the fact that all of these wonderful autumnal flowers will fall off their branches and populate your roofs and parking lots. In fact, autumn poses a number of unique challenges for commercial property maintenance. What can you do to make sure your autumn is more of a second spring and less of a winter of discontent?
Dare’s cleaning and sweeping manager, Mike Gleisberg gives some insight on what to put at the top of your autumn-maintenance checklist:
“Checking the roof is important, as well as making sure all gutters and downspouts are cleared of leaves. All gutters and downspouts should also be checked to make sure they are in good condition and securely fastened.
Another area to check are the storm drains in the parking areas. They must be kept clear or flooding and water damage is a real possibility. We regularly inspect this as part of our Asset Inspection Reports.”
It’s also important to make sure your parking lots and sidewalks are free of leaves. Rainy autumn days can turn a parking lot into a minefield. Wet leaves are a major slipping hazard you don’t want blanketing your property. Regularly clear the property of all leaves to ensure that your parking lots and sidewalks are safe.
Realityandlandscaping.com reminds us to winterize sprinkler systems as well as beds and grass. If you fail to winterize your sprinkler system in autumn you may be dealing with burst pipes in the winter. Winterizing beds and grass fortifies them for the long, cold winter. The results of this work will bloom in the spring time as your grass comes back healthy and green.
